Update: Dewey Balcony Accident Turns Fatal

Tragically, one of the two women who were injured when the balcony floor gave way on Memorial Day in Dewey has died. Sgt. Clifford Dempsey, Dewey Beach police spokesman, has released this statement late this afternoon.

On May 31, 2021, at approximately 4:50 PM the Dewey Beach Police Department responded to 4 Read Ave, in Dewey Beach, to a collapsed balcony with injuries reported. When the officers arrived they discovered a third-floor balcony detached and two females (47 YOA and 57 YOA of South Webster, OH) fell approximately 10 feet to the balcony below.聽 The responding officers were able to secure the partially detached floor and the victims were removed from the residence by the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Department. Both victims were transported to Beebe Medical Center, which is located in Lewes, Delaware and the initial status was reported as stable.

Both victims were later transported to Christiana Care which is located in Newark, DE. The 47 YOA victim suffered multiple fractures and is currently admitted to the medical center. The 57 YOA victim’s condition began to deteriorate throughout the night and she ultimately succumbed to her injuries around 7:00 AM. This investigation is ongoing and the Dewey Beach Police Department is working closely with town officials and other outside agencies.


ORIGINAL POST (6 p.m. on May 31): Two women were hospitalized after the balcony floor gave way and they fell about 10 feet to the second-floor balcony.

It happened here at the Adams Ocean Front Resort Villas on Read Avenue in Dewey Beach around 4:45 p.m. on Monday. Sgt. Clifford Dempsey, police spokesman, says both women were taken to the hospital but amazingly, neither had life-threatening injuries. A 57-year-old woman suffered a fractured pelvis and ribs while a 47-year-old fractured her femur. Both come from Ohio.
