Wilmington Woman Arrested in Rehoboth Beach for Vehicular Assault

Rehoboth Beach Police say they have arrested a 36-year-old Wilmington woman for a vehicular assault that took place on Saturday evening.

Officers say just before 9 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, they responded to the second block of Rehoboth Avenue west bound in the area of Second Street where a pedestrian reported their foot had been run over by a car. Upon arrival, Officers made contact with the victim, a 44-year-old woman from Baltimore, who was treated by EMS on the scene. She refused transport to Beebe Healthcare by ambulance. No one else was injured.

The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Deaira M. Barnhart of Wilmington was arrested short distance later. Officers observed signs she was intoxicated and administered a field sobriety test. Barnhart was transported to the Rehoboth Beach Police Department for additional testing. Barnhart had two children in her car during the incident.

Barnhart was charged with 1 Count of Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, 2 Counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child While Driving Under the Influence, 1 Count of Third Degree Vehicular Assault as well as numerous traffic offenses. She was committed to SCI in Georgetown in default of 9,501 dollars secured bail.
