VIDEO | Gov. Minner Remembered as ‘tough, but extremely warm and kind… remarkable… inspirational’
Governor Ruth Ann Minner’s lasting legacy as a two-term governor and the first woman in Delaware to be elected to that position was highlighted at her funeral service Wednesday in Milford – but plenty of remembrances were also focused on Ruth Ann Minner as a person, her story of overcoming obstacles and the trail she blazed for more and more women who have pursued and won elected office.
Minner died last week at age 86. President Biden, Governor John Carney, Senator Tom Carper, Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester, former Secretary of State Harriet Smith Windsor and former Budget Director and advisor Jennifer “J.J.” Wagner Davis were among the speakers.
“Ruth Ann was tough, because she had to be, because that’s who she was. But she also was extremely warm and kind. Family came first for her.” Governor John Carney
“She did everything with this calmness – seemed very calm – but with grit. I love it, because she could git ‘er done, she was resourceful, she was intelligent and innovative, and she was tenacious. She never gave up.” Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester
“She was one of the most remarkable and inspirational people that Jill and I have met.” – President Joe Biden. “Ruth Ann gave her best to Delaware. She gave her best to America.”
“May God bless you, dear friend. May God Bless America.”
