A Lewes man has died after he was struck by a car while riding a bicycle on Route 1.

According to the Delaware State Police Department, the incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. Thursday, September 11 when a 2017 Cadillac CTS was traveling in the right lane of northbound Coastal Highway, approaching the intersection of a single directional access road leading to Kings Highway.

A pedal cyclist was operating a light blue bicycle in the bus/bike lane of northbound Coastal Highway, directly to the right of the Cadillac, when, for unknown reasons, the operator of the Cadillac failed to see the bicycle and changed lanes to the right in order to turn onto Kings Highway.

While changing lanes, the right side of the Cadillac struck the bicycle within the bus/bike lane.

The pedal cyclist, 79-year-old Lloyd Kirby Jr., of Lewes, was wearing a helmet. He was transported to Christina Hospital. On Monday, September 23 he succumbed to his injuries.

The operator of the Cadillac, an 89-year-old Millsboro man, was not injured and remained on-scene.

The crash remains under investigation and no charges have been filed at this time.
