Two Injured in Head-on Crash on Route 1 Near Bethany Beach Thursday

An aborted vehicle pursuit just before 11 Thursday morning near Bethany Beach ended in a head-on collision at Coastal Highway and Pennsylvania Avenue. Bethany Beach police attempted a traffic stop on a red Honda, but the driver disregarded the officers’ lights and siren and sped off northbound on Route 1. The driver made a U-Turn south of the Indian River Inlet Bridge and continued at a high rate of speed southbound – even after Bethany Beach police discontinued the pursuit.

Delaware State Police continue to investigate the collision and say the driver of the Honda, an 18 year old Millsboro man crossed the median and collided head-on with a transit van in the northbound lanes.

The driver of the van – a 60 year old man from Frankford was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the Honda was flown to an area hospital with serious injuries.
