UPDATED: Fires Near Pinewater Farms Near Long Neck and Laurel Caused by Lightning
UPDATED – 7/18/19 – State Fire Marshal investigators confirm the two house fires on Woods Court last night were the result of lightning strikes. There were no injuries and damage is estimated at $15,000 at each residence.
A third lightning strike occurred on Mount Pleasant Road near Laurel causing an estimated $25,000 in damage. Crews from Sharptown, Blades and Delmar assisted Laurel firefighters with this blaze.

Firefighters from Indian River were called for a house fire on Woods Court in the Pinewater Farms area near Long Neck around 9:30pm. The fire was a reported lightning strike with smoke and possible fire in the basement and first floor bedroom. Crews found smoke in the home and fire located in the floor joists between the first floor and basement. Crews also determined the lightning strike also caused a rupture to the propane line.
While working at that fire, command was notified of a second incident a few houses away on the same street. Crews found fire in the crawl space.
Crews from Millsboro, Lewes and Rehoboth Beach assisted. The State Fire Marshal is investigating both incidents.
