NAME RELEASED: State Troopers Shoot and Kill Armed Paraplegic Man in Harbeson

Update (Aug. 29, 12:05 p.m.): Police have identified the paraplegic man who was shot and killed by state troopers yesterday as Robert Knox, 50, of Harbeson, Delaware.


 

Update (Aug. 28, 5:30 p.m.): The Delaware State Police is continuing to investigate a trooper-involved shooting that occurred just after 6 a.m. today while officers were serving a search warrant at a residence in the 22000 block of Harbeson Road in Harbeson.

According to police spokeswoman, MCpl. Melissa Jaffe, troopers had entered the residence and made contact with the 50-year-old male paraplegic resident who was lying in bed. While troopers were in the residence, police say the man “proceeded to obtain a handgun that was in arm’s reach.聽 A struggle over the weapon ensued which led to two troopers discharging their divisionally issued handgun.”

The suspect sustained gunshot wounds and was taken to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.聽 Police have not yet released the man’s name pending next-of-kin notification.

One of the troopers involved in the shooting has been employed by the Delaware State Police for eight years and the other for seven years. One trooper sustained minor injuries as a result of this incident. Both officers are on routine administrative leave.

Detectives did recover a loaded handgun, drugs and other weapons from the scene, police said.聽 This case continues to remain under investigation, with further details being released as they become available.


 

Original post (Aug. 28, 10:20 a.m.): Harbeson–聽The Delaware State Police聽are currently investigating a Trooper involved shooting that occurred earlier this morning.

The initial investigation has determined that at approximately聽6:07 a.m., Tuesday, August 28, 2018, a search warrant was executed by the Delaware State Police at a residence in the 22000 block of Harbeson Road.

The investigation is in it’s early stages in which a male suspect in the residence was shot and transported to a local area hospital.

This case continues to remain active and ongoing, with further details being released as they become available.
