Delaware’s super speller in the 2023 Scripps National Spelling Bee will come from Sussex County. A 5th grader from Love Creek Elementary School near Lewes, Declan Durand, won the first-ever Sussex County Libraries Regional Spelling Bee which was held last Saturday at Sussex Academy. The nine-round competition included 19 spellers from 10 local schools. This was the first-ever regional event in Sussex County to qualify for the Scripps National Spelling Bee which takes place in Washington, DC, at the end of May.

The Talk of Delmarva has learned from word pronouncer, David Skocik, that there was NO State Spelling Bee this year at St Mark’s. The school dropped the bee after 14 years of hosting after their spelling bee coordinator left the school. Skocik has been in contact with schools in central Delaware to host the State Spelling Bee in 2024.
