UPDATED: Sussex BOA Approves Allen Harim Special Use Exception

UPDATED – 10:30pm – The Sussex County Board of Adjustment has approved a special use exception for the Allen Harim plant in Millsboro.  The plant will be solely for deboning, packaging and shipping of poultry products.  The board found that while still being used for heavy industry, there would not be significant noise, dust or vibration – and the existing trees and ponds will provide a buffer.  Traffic would also be less than the plant’s former use for pickle processing – with just 165 employees and 16 trucks making use of the plant.  Wastewater would also be greatly reduced.  Allen Harim still has permits to apply for and additional public hearings that will be held in the future before the plant is up and running.

The Sussex County Board of Adjustment will revisit an application for a special use exception for a potentially hazardous use for Allen Harim’s Millsboro plant on Iron Branch Road.  They hope to use the facility or further processing, deboning, packaging and shipping of poultry products, but have met with a lot of opposition from area residents.   This is early in tonight’s meeting under Old Business and could be decided tonight.  The BOA meeting begins at 7pm.
