Seal Rescue in Fenwick Island

A seal rescue took place in Fenwick Island this week. MERR Institute responded to the young, recently weaned grey seal pup on February 24th. The underweight pup had multiple puncture wounds, possibly from another animal. After monitoring, rescuers determined it needed medical care. The seal was transported to the National Aquarium in Baltimore for treatment and rehabilitation.

Additional Information from MERR:

This young seal, named Pisces in accordance with MERR’s naming theme of celestial bodies, was very lucky that a beachgoer reported him to us.  His condition would have worsened without veterinary intervention, and would likely have proven fatal.  If you see a seal on the beach or elsewhere, please maintain a distance of 150′, keep dogs on a leash, and report it immediately by calling MERR’s stranding hotline # at 302-228-5029.  Our team of experts will diagnose the seal to determine if it is a healthy seal in need of rest or a seal in need of fluids and other lifesaving care.”
