A somber but stirring procession honored fallen Delmar Police Corporal Keith Heacook Sunday afternoon.

The body of the 22-year-veteran of the Delmar Police Department was transported from Shock Trauma in Baltimore through the Eastern Shore, into Sussex County Sunday. Police provided an escort, and all along the route officers, firefighters, first responders and citizens provided Heacook with a final salute. Many waved American flags, and some large flags were displayed from ladder trucks.

Governor John Carney paid respects at the funeral home.

The procession took place one week after Corporal Heacook was brutally assaulted as he responded to a fight in progress.
He died a few days later. Randon Wilkerson is expected to face upgraded charges of murder.

A couple in their 70s was also assaulted that morning, police say by Wilkerson. The man and woman have since been released from hospitals.
