UPDATED: Officer-involved Shooting Under Investigation in Dover
UPDATED 7/17/23 – A Dover man has been arrested following a shooting on June 11th on Sussex Avenue. Dover Police have determined that after they were called for a trespassing, 37 year old Tyrone Kersey got into a verbal argument with a 32 year old woman – which turned physical when Kersey pushed her to the ground. As police arrived, Kersey pulled a handgun and began shouting at police who told him to put the gun down. Instead he fired one shot at a parked vehicle occupied by the 32 year old woman and 1 year old child. Kersey then pulled the woman from the car – and pulled her and the child towards the residence. As the threat to all on the scene escalated, a Dover officer shot Kersey. After his release from Christiana Hospital, Kersey was taken to the DOC and is being held in default of a $99,500 cash bail on the following charges:
- Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony
- Aggravated Menacing
- Reckless Endangering First Degree (2x)
- Resisting Arrest with Force or Violence
- Endangering the Welfare of a Child
- Offensive Touching
The Dover Police Department will continue to investigate this incident in coordination with the Delaware Department of Justice – Division of Civil Rights and Public Trust.

ORIGINAL STORY – 06/11/23 – An officer involved shooting on Sussex Avenue in Dover Sunday night is under investigation by Dover Police. Officers were sent for a trespassing complaint just after 8:30 where a woman was arguing with a man and she refused to leave the residence. The man was in possession of a handgun and discharged the weapon in the presence of police – and failed to comply with officer commands after firing the gun. As the situation escalated, the 37 year old man was then shot by police, who immediately called for medical assistance. The suspect was transported to Bay Health Kent Campus in serious condition. Police recovered the handgun – there were no other victims and no additional threat to public safety.
The officer involved is a 2 ½ year Dover Police Department veteran assigned to the Patrol Division and has been placed on administrative leave, with pay, pending the outcome of the investigation.
