Research indicates that unattended cooking is the leading cause of cooking fires and deaths. Also, in general, cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires and home injuries. The Delaware State Fire School, Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office and Delaware State Fire Commission are working together to promote National Fire Prevention Week, which is observed each year during the week of October 9th in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. Local firefighters ask that you pay attention when cooking. Even a few seconds of being distracted could result in a tragedy. This year’s Fire Prevention Week™ (FPW™) campaign theme is “Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention™.”
