A Millsboro teen has been arrested for making threatening statements involving Sussex Tech High School.  School officials contacted Delaware State Police Friday concerning statements made by 15 year old Andrew West, who is a student at the school.  Police learned that West had been involved in a fight and became very disorderly – causing staff to intervene.  That’s when he made comments that he intended to return to school with a gun.  West was arrested at his home Saturday and charged with terroristic threatening.  He was committed to a youth facility on a $5000 cash bail.

The Sussex Technical School District released the following statement regarding the Delaware State Police announcement of the arrest of an individual in connection with a suspected threat to the school:

We take all potential threats to the safety of our students and staff very seriously. Our staff responded to this incident and assisted and cooperated with the Delaware State Police during their thorough and diligent investigation. We are pleased to reassure our families that this incident has been handled.

The safety and well-being of our students and staff is our top priority. Our school safety officers are present at all school functions for the protection of students and staff, our entire staff receives emergency response training, and we hold regular drills and tests of our emergency procedures to prepare for any eventuality.

Counseling services are available to any member of the Sussex Tech community. We are grateful to the Delaware State Police for their prompt assistance and support, and thankful for our staff members who handled this issue promptly and effectively.
