U.S. Senator Ben Cardin, a Democrat of Maryland has signed on as a co-sponsor of legislation that would allow people to buy into Medicare at age 50.

Senator Cardin says the legislation would help millions of Americans who are approaching retirement or are being forced to retire early and are facing increasing health care needs and rising costs.

The Senator says the bill would also expand coverage to include healthier, younger people, which he says would allow the Medicare program to grow and provide better overall coverage.
