UPDATED: Man Crashes Scooter into VW, Abandons Boy and Flees on Foot!

Rehoboth Beach police announced late tonight that Akeem L. Harris, the man who allegedly drove a rented motor scooter with a boy on board into a car last Saturday, has turned himself in.聽 However, the police news release states that “Harris has not been charged at this time as this investigation remains active.”

Rehoboth Beach police are investigating an accident where a man drove this rented motor scooter into the Volkswagen Passat while riding with a 9-year-old passenger. He fled on foot and left the boy behind with an injured ankle. It happened around 3:15 p.m. this past Saturday in the ocean block of Maryland Avenue.
Police say the driver of the Volkswagen Passat was turning left into a parking spot when he was struck by the motor scooter driver who attempted to pass him on the left side of the roadway. They were both headed toward the boardwalk.
Police have identified the driver of the motor scooter as Akeem L. Harris and have obtained warrants for charges that include second-degree reckless endangering, leaving the scene of a collision, failure to report a collision, unsafe passing on the left, driving while suspended and permitting a passenger under 16 to ride upon a moped without a helmet.
