Lewes man cut girlfriend with a knife during assault, police say

A Lewes man was arrested after police say he assaulted his girlfriend and cut her with a knife during an argument.

According to Delaware State Police, the incident occurred around 6:30 p.m., Tuesday as troopers were dispatched to 19000 block of Beaver Dam Road in Lewes, for reports of an assault.

Troopers arrived and met with a 23-year-old woman who said she had been assaulted earlier in the day by her boyfriend, 31-year-old Anthony E. Diorio. It was learned that the victim and Diorio were engaged in an argument when Diorio held the victim down and prevented her from leaving, according to police.

Diorio then proceeded to strike the victim several times and cut her with a knife, police said. The victim sustained minor injuries and declined medial treatment.

A computer inquiry revealed Diorio had a no contact order with the victim.

Diorio was at the scene when police arrived. He was taken into custody without incident. Troopers located approximately 4 grams of marijuana inside the vehicle in which Diorio occupied.

Diorio was transported was charged with Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony, Assault Second Degree, Aggravated Menacing, Unlawful Imprisonment Second Degree, Breach of Release and Possession of Marijuana.

Diorio was arraigned and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on $31,001 cash only bond.
