A Lewes man has been arrested on drug and assault charges after police say he struck a woman in the back of the head with lumber, seriously injuring her during an argument.

According to the Delaware State Police Department, around 11:50 a.m., Wednesday troopers responded to Beebe Medical Center for an assault complaint. Upon arrival, police met with a 32-year-old female who said she was assaulted by 50-year-old Donald L. Maull earlier that morning.

Further investigation revealed that the victim responded to Maull鈥檚 residence in the 17000 block of Ward Avenue in Lewes to retrieve her belongings as she recently moved out, police said.

The victim told police that she was engaged in an argument with Maull when he proceeded to strike her in the back of her head with a piece of lumber. She was able to seek assistance from a nearby neighbor and was taken to the hospital.

The victim sustained a serious head injury, according to police.

Troopers located Maull later that day traveling as a passenger in a vehicle on Beaver Dam Road. He was taken into custody and found in possession of approximately 0.001 grams of crack cocaine and drug paraphernalia.

Maull was charged with Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony, Assault Second Degree, Aggravated Menacing, Possession of a Controlled or Counterfeit Substance, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He was arraigned and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on $76,400 secured bond.
