Legislation Filed Friday Would Require Unattended Firearms in Vehicles to be Locked Up
Legislation sponsored by Representative Krista Griffith(D) would impose criminal charges for gun owners who leave a firearm unattended and unsecured in a vehicle. House Bill 155 was filed Friday and would require that unattended firearms in a vehicle be stored in a locked box or container, a firearms rack on the vehicle or locked in the trunk. A firearm would not be required to be locked up if the owner is in the vehicle with the firearm. HB 155 has been assigned to the House Judiciary Committee.
Additional information from Rep. Griffith’s press release:
According to Delaware State Police鈥檚 State Bureau of Identification, nearly 600 firearms have been reported stolen from vehicles in Delaware since 2019. In many of these situations, the weapons were left unsecured.
Under HB 155, unsafe storage of a firearm in a vehicle would be a class A misdemeanor.
