Early Tuesday morning a Wicomico Sheriff’s deputy spotted a vehicle that failed to dim their hi-beams for oncoming traffic. The deputy made a traffic stop on the vehicle, driven by 19 year old Jakeem Jackson of Salisbury. Jackson pulled into a Carroll Street parking lot – and began to run from the scene – with the deputy following – and then jumped into the Wicomico River. The deputy crossed a nearby footbridge to meet Jackson on the other side when he saw Jackson struggling and go under. Additional police, fire and EMS helped search for Jackson – his body was located about 90 minutes later. Sheriff Mike Lewis has asked the Talbot County Sheriff’s Office to conduct an independent death investigation.
