RAL: Regional Juried Biennial Exhibition – Rehoboth Beach

August 23 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Hermann-Financial

From August 23 to September 22, The Rehoboth Art League welcomes back the Regional Juried Biennial Exhibition for its next editions of art shows. Plus, Charlese Phillips displays her fiber artwork in “Pigment and Strand: Charlese Phillips” and two showcases of pieces from RAL’s Fine Art Collection continue.

On the evening of August 23rd from 5-7 pm, the art league will be hosting an opening reception for these new exhibits, inviting anyone interested to visit the Corkran, Tubbs, Ventures, and Homestead galleries to see the displayed work.

RAL’s “Regional Juried Biennial Exhibition” returns for its 11th year with works from artists living in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington D.C. This exhibition, which will take over the Corkran and Tubbs galleries, represents a strong collection of 2-D and 3-D works by emerging and master-level fine artists. Artists will be judged by Charles Plante, an established art dealer who has worked with many notable art institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the British Museum. Plante will choose recipients for the categories of Best in Show, Juror’s Awards of Excellence, and Honorable Mentions.

Charles Plante will give a free Gallery Talk on August 24th at 10 am in the Corkran Gallery to discuss his award-winning picks and other notable pieces from the 11th Regional Juried Biennial Exhibition. All RAL Gallery Talks are open to the public and exhibiting artists.

The multi-media artist Charlese Phillips will showcase her exquisite pieces in the Ventures Gallery during her solo exhibition, “Pigment and Strand.” Phillips’ work is an experience of paint and fiber and how the combination of both can give life to each artwork, filling it with vibrancy and texture. The pieces’ varying color palettes were chosen to give the viewer a different experience with each work, filled with subtle details to highlight each material and emphasize how the materials flow together. Connecting paint and fiber in her art allows Phillips to explore many sides of herself, from her expressiveness to her meticulous, organizational nature.

Through September 22, the league has two unique curated shows on display to highlight pieces from RAL’s permanent fine art collection.

To coincide with the league’s annual Outdoor Show event, Collections Committee Member Kim Grube has curated an exhibit that features artwork by former “Outdoor Show Artists,” on display in the DeWitt Gallery. For 51 years, the Rehoboth Art League has presented its Outdoor Fine Art and Fine Craft Show, drawing thousands of visitors and art lovers to the league’s campus. Throughout these decades, numerous artists have showcased their artwork during the first two weekends in August. As a result, RAL acquired many works of art from exhibiting artists that are now in the fine art collection — some of which will be available to view in this exhibition.

The Homestead is showcasing “Women’s Work: Selected Works from the Women Artists in RAL’s Fine Art Collection.” A creative force, female artists have played an important role in the enrichment of the arts. Although their contribution to the art world had always taken a “back seat” to the contribution of their male counterparts, it wasn’t until the beginning of the 20th century that things began to change for women, which transformed the traditionally male-driving social structure around the world. This exhibition highlights work created by well, and lesser, known women from the League’s Fine Art Collection.

The exhibitions are free and open to everyone during the regular gallery hours of Monday through Saturday, 10 am to 4 pm and Sunday, noon to 4 pm.

The Rehoboth Art League is supported, in part, by a grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts. The Division promotes Delaware arts events on www.DelawareScene.com
