Dover man struck, killed crossing the highway in Milford

A Dover man has died after police say he was struck by a truck while crossing a highway in Milford.

According to the Delaware State Police Department, the incident occurred around 5:40 p.m., Wednesday when a 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 was traveling westbound on Milford-Harrington Highway, west of Williamsville Road.

A pedestrian was trying to cross Milford-Harrington Highway, heading towards a small strip mall/parking lot.

The driver saw the pedestrian in the road and tried to brake but was unable to avoid the collision and the truck struck the pedestrian, according to police.

The driver, a 19-year-old male from Harrington, was properly restrained and remained on scene. He was not injured in the crash.

The pedestrian, a 55-year-old Dover man, was not carrying a light or utilizing a designated crosswalk. He was transported to Sussex Bayheath Hospital where he was pronounced dead. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The crash remains under investigation.
