The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control says they have been notified of the accidental release of partially treated wastewater at Mountaire Farms of Delaware’s poultry processing facility in Millsboro.

Mountaire Farms said they discovered the release at 5 a.m. on Wednesday, which resulted in the discharge of between 750,000 and 1 million gallons of partially treated wastewater onto the ground surface. Mountaire says they believe a technical failure of a wastewater system component was to blame, and that no contaminants exited the property, or entered the nearby Swann Creek.

DNREC says it has notified Mountaire Farms to take all the appropriate steps to mitigate the release and minimize any adverse effects related to the failure. Mountaire says cleanup efforts are now underway.
