Delaware Officials Unveil Improved Road Safety Legislation

Improved safety on roadways in Delaware is the focus of a package of new initiatives and legislation that state officials unveiled today. Governor Carney joined the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT), the Delaware Department of Safety and Homeland Security (DSHS), Members of the General Assembly, and advocates to explain the details of the package, which include:

• Expanding the charge of reckless driving to include speeding over 90 mph on any road

• Establishing an open container law—prohibiting open alcohol containers in the passenger areas of vehicles while driving

• A graduated motorcycle helmet law—requiring that new riders wear a helmet in their first two years of their endorsement

• Expanding the move-over law—to include disabled passenger vehicles on the side of the road

• Strengthening child safety seat requirements—to add more specific requirements for young children

• Enhancing lighting on snow removal equipment to make trucks and crews more visible to the public

A package of legislation unveiled at the Delaware Highway Memorial Garden in Smyrna today aims to resolve what Governor John Carney calls â€śa crisis” on Delaware roadways. Last year, Delaware tied its record for traffic fatalities with 165 lives lost on roads in the state. Governor Carney’s Fiscal Year 24 recommended budget also includes funding to create a Traffic Education and Enforcement Unit. This new unit of 11 officers will patrol Delaware’s highest incident roadways to help curb excessive speeding and prevent accidents.
