UPDATED: Cape Henlopen School Board Approves May Tax Referendum
UPDATED – 8:40pm – The Cape Henlopen School Board is coming back with a second referendum. The board voted to approve a second referendum vote during Thursday night’s meeting. The date will be Tuesday, May 21st. Again this will be a single question ballot however Dr. Fulton says that the natatorium (pool) has been taken out of the conversation and they are asking for 3 cents less in the current expense. Director of Operations, Dr. Jason Hale told the board that they have added two additional locations to vote – Beacon Middle School and the Lewes Public Library – and there will be additional voting machines and staff from the Department of Elections to help move the voting along more smoothly – they were not prepared for the number of voters who turned out for the March 26th referendum vote.
The legal notice of the upcoming referendum will be posted at least 4 weeks before the election date. Director of Sussex County Department of Elections, Bo McDowell tells the Talk of Delmarva that state law specifies that a school district can only hold two referendums within a twelve-month period. If this election fails, the Cape Henlopen School District would have to wait one year from the date of the March election to try again.
