Burst Pipe Leaves Tangier Island Without Water
January 30, 2019
Tangier Island residents are without water after a water main break on the remote Chesapeake Bay island.
The small island of just under 500 people lost access to water on Sunday, January 20 following a burst pipe. Officials say temporary repairs are not possible, therefore islanders must await a permanent solution which could be lengthy. In the meantime, all water must be ferried over from the mainland. That includes the ferry from Crisfield, which has provided donated packages of water. Tangier residents have also received support and aide from residents of nearby Smith Island.
Donations will be accepted until Friday afternoon, with those shipments expected to arrive on the Island on Saturday morning.
