Just days after the unexpected passing of longtime Maryland House Speaker Michael Busch, who served in the role since 2003, a Baltimore County Democrat is entering the race for Speaker.

Adrienne Jones, a Delegate representing the 10th district in the House of Delegates and President Pro-Tempore of the House has announced plans to run in the special election to succeed Busch. Jones, 64, has served in an acting capacity in Busch’s absence during his medical leave after being diagnosed with pneumonia.

A special legislative session will convene on May 1 to select a new Speaker. A winning candidate must receive a majority of members of the Democratic-controlled House of Delegates votes.
