About 5000 hikers took advantage of the mild New Year’s Day weather and joined Maryland’s First Day Hikes initiative. The Maryland Park Service registered over 3800 hikers who took part in guided hikes while over 1100 hikers struck out on their own. Lt. Governor Boyd Rutherford got into the action as well – hiking at Patuxent River State Park. It’s estimated that Maryland hikers traveled over 10,000 miles on New Year’s Day in the many Maryland State Parks.
