Delaware State Police are investigating a crash last week that has turned fatal.

Authorities say the incident, which happened on Monday, March 4 happened on Northbound Route 13 in Dover in a dedicated left turn lane. A 16-year-old male in a Jeep Wrangler was in the lane, intending to make a left turn when a Volkswagen Jetta operated by a 72-year-old male in the Southbound lane collided with the Jeep head-on. Authorities say the Jeep driver failed to remain stopped at the flashing red signal and entered the Southbound lanes of travel, directly into the Volkswagen’s path.

The Volkswagen driver has been identified as 72-year-old Alan Gottfried of Dover. He was transported to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital in serious condition. He later succumbed to his injuries.

Both drivers were restrained properly. The roadway was closed for approximately two hours last Monday as authorities investigated and cleared the crash. Delaware State Police’s Collision Reconstruction Unit continues their investigation. No charges have been filed.
