2021 Joshua M. Freeman Valor Awards Recognize Police, Fire & EMS
The Bethany-Fenwick Area Chamber of Commerce is pleased to honor the outstanding police officers, paramedics, EMT’s and firefighters who help keep our local communities safe throughout the year. The 2021 Joshua M. Freeman Valor Awards, were presented by the Carl M. Freeman Companies on Friday to recognize their service and dedication to our community. This year’s award was given to the entire staff of Sussex County Emergency Services.
During Friday’s ceremony, both Delmar Police Corporal Keith Heacook and Laura Madara of the Selbyville Fire Police, were honored for their service. Cpl Heacook was attacked and killed while responding to a fight-in-progress on April 25 and Madara was killed while responding to a vehicle crash on April 9th.
The Joshua M. Freeman Foundation and Selbyville Volunteer Fire Company have partnered to offer a scholarship administered through Delaware Tech – the Laura Madara First Responder Endowed Scholarship, for Sussex County women interested in pursuing an education in EMT basic training of an associate degree in criminal justice, EMT, homeland security, emergency management or law enforcement.
The Valor Awards recognize local police, volunteer fire companies and EMS units to identify those first responders who have gone above and beyond in their service to the community – the ten towns that make up the Quiet Resorts. WGMD’s Mike Bradley was the emcee.
