State Sen. Hocker Calls on Valenzuela to Step Aside in Treasurer’s Race

There are some Republicans who are calling on Treasurer Candidate Sher Valenzuela to step aside.

Speaking with WGMD’s Jim Rash, State Senator Gerald Hocker said that Valenzuela needs to end her campaign for Treasurer in favor of the other Republican candidate, Ken Simpler.

“She’s got a bright political future, she’s very well spoken, she’s a business person, I like her very much, but to do what she did in this Treasurer’s race, I think she has just committed, if she doesn’t pull out and get behind Ken [Simpler], political suicide,” stated Hocker.  “I hate to see that happen to good people.”

Then Rash and Hocker brought up the topic of Valenzuela pursuing the Insurance Commissioner seat when that opens up instead.

“She would be great because she has paid those premiums, she knows what it is for workman’s comp, she knows what it is for health insurance, she knows what it is for commercial packages and all that,” said Hocker.  “She’d be good for that.”

Hocker added, “But, if she destroys our chances for Treasurer, I think her chances will be zero.”

But the damage of Valenzuela continuing her campaign, in Hocker’s opinion, would be too great.  The Republican State Senator said the Treasurer’s race is the party’s big chance to get another Republican into a state-wide office.  Right now, State Auditor Tom Wagner is the only Republican elected to state-wide office.

“There’s just too many Republicans who are very upset with what she did last minute with no indication that she was going to do that,” noted Hocker.

State Treasurer Chip Flowers is facing a Democratic Party primary challenge from former Governor Jack Markell aide Sean Barney, who has the endorsement of Senator Tom Carper, in light of personal spending issues within the State Treasury.  Flowers is facing a Republican challenge from Ken Simpler and Sher Valenzuela.
