Are Dewey’s Northbeach Tuesday Night Drink Specials Out of Control?

Several people were injured and one was arrested during a “Dollar Drink” special at Northbeach Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. The bar was packed with hundreds of rowdy patrons. Police were able to keep it under control.

Sgt. Clifford Dempsey, Dewey Beach police spokesman, said officers dealt with numerous fights. “Too many to keep track of,” he stated.

At one point, he says the crowd stretched from the Northbeach parking lot almost to Coastal Highway at Dagsworthy Avenue.

He estimates that several hundred people in Northbeach became disruptive and many started fighting. When the bar let out, Sgt. Dempsey says it was at full capacity, almost 1000 people.

Dewey Beach police were proactive and called for assistance from other law enforcers. The state police, Delaware Alcohol and Tobacco Enforcement, and police dogs from Lewes and Milton came to assist.

Because of this, the Wawas outside Rehoboth and Lewes on Tuesdays close until the crowds clear.

Several people were injured from the fights but none seriously.

Sgt. Dempsey says police made one arrest for disorderly conduct.
