It was a packed house in Georgetown this morning for this week’s Sussex County Council meeting for two major topics: the county budget and last week’s racial spat between Councilman Sam Wilson and Councilwoman Joan Deaver with contributions from Councilman Vance Phillips.

The main focus of the meeting was on the proposed budget for fiscal year 2015.  That budget features no property tax increase, a 2% cost of living pay raise for employees, and some sewer rate increases to county residents.

Then, the real show began.  Members of organizations like NAACP and Equality Delaware packed the chamber to watch, hear, and speak about their displeasure with Councilmen Sam Wilson and Vance Phillips for their role in the racial spat that also included Councilwoman Joan Deaver.

The speakers came up to shame the two Republicans for their comments during the previous session about a grant request for a NAACP program.  The grant was approved on a 4-1 vote, with Wilson being the one dissenting vote.

One speaker did criticize the grant program saying that it is simply a way for the councilmembers to buy their votes.  None of the councilmembers offered a direct response to the comments or reaction to WGMD’s Jon Budler.

Next week is an off week for the council and will return the week after.
