Sen. Coons Among 8 Senators Asking IRS to Exempt Volunteer First Responders From Obamacare Employer Mandate

Dec 17, 2013 -- 9:28am

Chris Coons is among eight Senators who are calling for the IRS to exempt volunteer first responders from the Affordable Care Act’s employer mandate.

In a letter to Treasury Secretary Jack Lew, the Senators asked him to clarify the “Shared Responsibility” provision of the law for volunteer firefighters and EMTs. The Senators say volunteer fire departments don’t have the guidance they need to understand how they may be affected by that provision. The law is unclear about whether volunteer firefighters and EMTs are considered employees.

In Delaware, there are 6,000 volunteer firefighters and other emergency responders.
