Delmarva Power Warning Residential, Business Customers About "Green Dot" Scam

Dec 04, 2013 -- 9:22am

Delmarva Power is warning customers about a new scam.

The utility company has been notified about the “Green Dot” scam. Police and other utility providers say scammers are targeting both residents and businesses. Scammers are telling business owners both in person and on the phone that their electric service will be shut off for not paying their bill unless they buy the “Green Dot Money Pack” from different stores. Victims are then given instructions to call a number and get a card account number and PIN number. The scammers then use that information to steal money out of the businesses’ accounts the transactions aren’t traceable.

Customers are being told to ask for an official photo ID from anyone who shows up at their door claiming to be from Delmarva Power. If an ID can’t be shown, call police and the power company.
