I-495 Reopens After Box Truck Crashes, Spills Diesel Fuel

Nov 04, 2013 -- 11:10am

I-495 in New Castle is now reopen after a crash early this morning.

Delaware State Police say around 4:45 this morning, 29-year-old Karl Lehr of Halethorpe, Maryland was driving south in a box truck on I-495. Lehr says after he passed the exit for Route 13, he swerved to avoid a deer on the highway, but hit a guardrail along the right shoulder, went across the highway, and came to a stop on the left shoulder. The collision with the guardrail ruptured the fuel tank, spilling diesel fuel onto the highway. The crash closed I-495 for about five hours to clean up the spilled fuel.

Lehr was cited for driving a commercial vehicle without a commercial driver’s license.
