State Police Warning Residents About "Distraction Burglaries"

Aug 24, 2013 -- 8:57am

Residents in North Wilmington are being warned about letting burglars into their homes.

Delaware State Police say a Hispanic man told elderly homeowners that he was from the water company and needed to check their home’s water and plumbing. While the man claiming to be the water company employee talked with the homeowners, other Hispanic men came in and stole cash and jewelry. The homeowners didn’t realize that a burglary had happened until after the men left. One incident happened in March, and another happened this past week. The men are described as between 25 and 30 years old. Anyone with information is asked to call State Police Troop 2 at (302) 834-2630, extension 603.

Troopers say homeowners should be careful when letting strangers into their homes. If someone shows up at your door and claims to be from a utility company, ask for ID, and then contact the company before letting the person inside.
