Aug 01, 2013 -- 5:51am

A man is fighting for his life this morning after being struck by a Delaware State Police car on Kirkwood Highway east of the Duncan Road intersection in Wilmington just before 1 o’clock.

Police say the man was walking in a northbound direction attempting to cross the eastbound lanes of Kirkwood Highway, when he crossed directly in the path of an eastbound Ford Crown Victoria, fully marked patrol vehicle, driven by a 32-year-old male Trooper assigned to Troop 6 in Prices Corner.

The Trooper attempted swerve to the right to avoid the pedestrian, but was unable to do so. The left front corner of the patrol vehicle struck the pedestrian in the roadway. The pedestrian was thrown to the roadway after the impact.

The pedestrian was taken to Christiana Hospital where he was admitted in critical condition.
