All the piping plovers at Gordons Pond have fledged and DNREC officials will reopen a half-mile portion of the ocean shoreline at the Cape Henlopen State Park pond on Thursday/this morning. The shoreline was closed to pedestrians and vehicles on May 21 to protect the threatened birds as well as other beach nesting birds during their breeding period. Just one pair of plovers nested at Gordons Pond – they produced 2 chicks. American oystercatchers and least terns also nested at Gordons Pond this year.
