Delaware Senators Tom Carper and Chris Coons are cosponsoring a bill to reduce the excise taxes small breweries pay.
The Small Brewer Reinvestment and Expanding Workforce, or Small BREW Act, would reduce the excise tax on each barrel brewed by small breweries, defined as those that produce less than 2 million barrels of beer a year. Currently, brewers pay an excise tax of $18 per barrel brewed. Small breweries pay an excise tax of $7 a barrel for the first 60,000 barrels they brew each year. For breweries that produce up to 6 million barrels of beer per year, the bill would reduce the excise tax to $3.50 a barrel on their first 60,000 barrels, and $16 a barrel for everything up to 2 million barrels per year.
The bill is sponsored by Senators Ben Cardin of Maryland and Susan Collins of Maine. Barbara Mikulski of Maryland is also one of the cosponsors.
