Congressional Badge of Bravery Award Goes to Fallen NCCo Officer

Apr 21, 2013 -- 3:21am

Delaware Senators Tom Carper and Chris Coons and Congressman John Carney will be joined by Delaware U.S. Attorney Charles Oberly Monday, in presenting fallen New Castle County Police Officer Joseph Szczerba (ZUR-) with the Congressional Badge of Bravery Award.

The award was created by Congress in 2008 to honor local, state and federal law enforcement officers who have distinguished themselves for exceptional acts of bravery in the line of duty.

Then-Sgt. Szczerba was killed in the line of duty shortly after midnight on September 16, 2011, as he attempted to take a suspect into custody in Penn Acres Park in New Castle. Sgt. Szczerba, who had served on the New Castle County force for 18 years, was posthumously promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.
