The Coast Guard Captain of the Port for the port of Hampton Roads has rescinded the temporary safety zone on the southern branch of the Elizabeth River in the vicinity of the Gilmerton Bridge.

The waterway was reopened to all maritime traffic without restrictions Friday.

Contractors working on the demolition of the old bridge span of the Gilmerton Bridge had uncovered what was reported to be old, unexploded naval ordnance at approximately 9 a.m.
