DNREC will hold a public meeting tonight on the final phase for the proposed cleanup for the Burton Island ash landfill near Millsboro.
Burton Island is a 144-acre site at Indian River and Island Creek on property owned by Indian River Power, LLC. From 1957 to 1979 Delmarva Power & Light, the previous owner, used the property for coal ash disposal, which has caused environmental contamination at the site as well as into the surface waters and sediments.
Some work has been done at the site – in 2010, NRG Energy has installed erosion control with bank stabilization measures. You’ll find the proposed plan at the Millsboro Public Library on West State Street.
The public hearing starts tonight at 6 p.m. at the Millsboro Fire Hall.
