Wilmington Police Officer Shot in Jaw During High-Speed Chase Sun

Feb 04, 2013 -- 5:54am

A three-year veteran Wilmington Police officer is recovering this morning after being shot in the jaw Sunday afternoon while pursuing a suspect in the Southbridge section of the City.

Police say Officer Justin Wilkers and another officer  attempted to conduct a routine traffic stop just before 4 p.m.; the driver though refused to stop and the officers chased the vehicle to the 1200 block of Peach Street. That’s when police say someone in the car opened fire, striking Officer Wilkers; he was taken to Christiana Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition this morning.

City officials have planned a 10 o’clock press conference for this morning to announce new details in connection with the shooting.
