Aug 24, 2013 -- 6:28am

Thousands of Marylanders have gotten help from the state Attorney General’s Office to avoid foreclosures on their homes.

The Maryland Attorney General’s Office says more than 17,000 Maryland families have received financial compensation through the federal Mortgage Servicing Settlement between March 1, 2012 and June 31 of this year. Those families have received nearly $1.36 billion in relief.

Just over 10,000 more families who lost their homes to foreclosure between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2011 received one-time payments of nearly $1,500 each. Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler explained that the settlement has helped thousands of families stay in their homes, as well as navigate through difficult times as a result of the foreclosure crisis.
