Jul 13, 2013 -- 7:56am

The Delaware Department of Health and Social Services has launched a new program to provide young people with job and leadership skills.

The DHSS has launched the Pilot Delaware Leadership In Service Program. The program was started by the Division of State Service Centers through the Office of Volunteerism. 30 teenagers from the Southbridge neighborhood in Bear are being employed based on the model of the AmeriCorps’ Service-Learning Program. For eight weeks, the 14 to 18-year-olds will be working at jobs in government agencies, hospitals, small businesses, nonprofits and summer camps, for 24 hours a week, and taking part in service and educational workshops for six hours a week. 18 of the positions are underwritten through a $50,000 Community Service Block Grant. The other 12 positions are being funded with a $77,000 grant through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program’s Assurance 16 funds.
