UPDATED STORY: Ocean City Police have arrested two Reading, Pennsylvania men following a stabbing in the resort Saturday morning.
Police say around 2:15 a.m., officers were in the area of 18th Street and Coastal Highway when they heard what appeared to be gunshots coming from the area of 1801 Coastal Highway near Kingfish Road. Officers responded to the area and found a man, whose name is not being released, who appeared to be the victim of a gunshot wound.
The investigation revealed that two men had been in the pool at the Islander Motel when another group of people walking by on the street engaged in a verbal exchange with the men in the pool; the argument escalated when the men in the pool confronted the group on the street; police say that’s when 21-year-old Elvin Jovany Mendez-Espada pulled out a handgun and shot the two men who had been in the pool.
Further investigation revealed that the one man had been shot through his clothing and was NOT injured. The injured victim was was taken to PRMC in Salisbury for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Police arrested Mendez-Espada and 19-year-old Carwin Duarte a short time later. Mendez-Espada is charged with two counts of 1st degree assault, two counts of 1st degree attempted murder and use of a handgun in the commission of a violent crime. Duarte has been charged with 2nd degree assault, disorderly conduct and affray.
Both men are awaiting an initial appearance in front of the Maryland District Court Commissioner.
UPDATED STORY: Ocean City Police are investigating an overnight shooting in the resort.
Police say the shooting occurred at 2:30 on 18th Street where one person was shot; the victim was taken to PRMC in Salisbury and is listed in stable condition.
Police now confirming that another person was shot at, but was NOT hit.
Police have two suspects in custody and are continuing to investigate the incident.
