Governor Jack Markell signed the most significant piece of gun safety legislation into law on Wednesday. House Bill 35, the background check bill, has been signed into law by Governor Jack Markell. The legislation closes a loophole in state law by requiring background checks in connection with the sale or transfer of firearms between private parties. The governor was surrounded by law enforcement, advocates for gun safety and lawmakers from both parties as well as four Sandy Hook Elementary school families from Newtown, Connecticut. The background check bill goes into effect on July first.
