State Senator Ernie Lopez (R-Lewes) visited students at the Telamon Corporation's Coolsprings Head Start Program in Milton this morning as part of Children's Mental Health Awareness Week. Senator Lopez read to the kids about using their words to express their feelings. He showed the students pictures from inside Legislative Hall, and answered questions from them about what he does in Dover.
Children's Mental Health Awareness Week is put on by the Children's Department's Division of Prevention and Behavioral Health Services, and is designed to highlight the importance of children's mental health and the need for them to have access to mental health services. Sen. Lopez described how with the youth and elderly populations growing in Sussex County, the demand is growing on the limited mental health resources. As the father of two young daughters, he says the mental health of our children is something that's very important to him.
After reading to the kids, Sen. Lopez presented a certificate from the Children's Department to the staff of Coolsprings Head Start, recognizing them for their work in addressing the mental health needs of their children.
