May is National Electricity Safety Month

May 04, 2013 -- 6:59am

This month is National Electrical Safety Month. Delmarva Power is offering some tips so you can stay safe if you’re going to be around or working with electricity.

If you’re planning to dig for a home improvement or construction project, call 8-1-1, the national “One Call Notification System” number, so utility lines can be marked. If you’re going to be carrying long or tall items such as ladders, pool cleaning equipment or tree saws, carry them parallel to the ground. Before putting them up into the air, make sure they’re clear of power lines. Remind children to stay away from electric transmission facilities, including substations, towers and mounted transformers, the “green boxes.”

Residents are reminded that electricity can move through conductive materials such as water, aluminum, metal, and even wood. If you see a downed power line, call Delmarva Power’s emergency outage line at 1-800-898-8042.
